Lose Weight, Be Healthy

Ever asked yourself “How much should I weigh”? As you compare yourself to others, you will notice a wide variation in people’s weights, and it may be difficult to judge what you should weigh. Especially since more and more people are now overweight. What about you? Are you overweight or not? Many factors influence your ideal weight, including age, gender, activity level, body fat, body frame, lean muscle mass and height. Hence, people who are the same age and height do not necessarily have to have the same weight. Still, if you want a more specific number, then try checking out the body mass index.

Do you know what Body Mass Index is?

Body mass index, also known as BMI, is a method used by both men and women when calculating body fat percentage. The calculation is based on a person’s height and weight. You can easily calculate your BMI using many different websites. You can easily get the result in seconds by just filling in the necessary blanks.

Those who are underweight have a BMI of 18.5 or lower. Between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered “normal.” Overweight is is between 25 and 29.9, while anything over 30 is considered obese.

Other Alternatives

The National Institutes of Health has also developed a method of finding out how much a person should weigh. You’ll find that this method does not take various factors into consideration and thus can be quite off in the results. Basically, for a five foot tall male, the ideal weight is 106 pounds, with an additional 6 pounds for every inch added. For females, the weight should be 100 pounds at 5 feet, with 5 more pounds added for each inch.

So what happens now?

So, after answering the all important question of “How much should my ideal weight be?” what would happen next? That would depend on the results. If you are overweight, then you will need to reduce your calorie intake and find more ways to burn calories. Your goal would be to get a firmer and leaner body if you are already in the normal weight bracket.

There are various ways you can do this. Increased physical activity is a good choice for many reasons. Exercises partnered with a good diet are sure to take effect when done over a long period of time. There are other methods such as careful food choice and diet pills. You’ll find that the market today is full of medicines that promise easy fat burning. However, you should be very careful when contemplating this solution. Not only is it costly, but  risky to your health. Most of the prescription medications approved by the FDA for weight loss have been removed from the market due to serious side effects.  And many remedies on the market are not even reviewed for safety.

It’s important to reach and maintain a healthy weight, but never sacrifice your health to reach your goal. Remember, you can be attractive and healthy at the same time.
